Before the availability of metals and plastic, household articles such as spice boxes, lamps and bowls were made of stone.

Ghantiis a dry grinder made with two stone wheels that are operated with the help of a stick passing through the wheel on the top. The substances to be ground are kept in between the two wheels. The wheels are rotated by the stick. This circular motion grinds the substance which is collected in the stone base container below.

The mortar-and-pestle, a common kitchen item, is made with a smooth and non-porous stone such as soapstone, granite and sometimes marble.

Presently, home décor items such as showpieces, portable shrines and ritualistic figures made of stone are also popular. Kitchen sinks and ornamental fountains made of marble for gardens are also in demand.
