Ransingha/ Musical Instrument of Himachal Pradesh

The Ransingha is a traditional, trumpet-like wind instrument made primarily of copper, deeply embedded in the musical and ceremonial heritage of Himachal Pradesh.

Ransingha, along with drums like the Dammama and wind instruments like the Shehnai, plays a prominent role in these community expressions.

Ransingha is crafted by joining two curved metal tubes, usually made of copper or brass, into an ‘S’ shape—each segment resembling the letter ‘C’. One section is broader and supports the structure, while the other is narrower and helps produce sound.

Beyond music, the Ransingha serves symbolic purposes. It is blown during festivals, weddings, religious rituals, and to welcome dignitaries. It is believed to dispel negative energies and attract prosperity. Once used on battlefields to boost morale, today it endures as a spiritual emblem, especially in temple and folk processions.

Ransingha is produced in several regions of Himachal including Kullu-Manali, Shimla, and Mandi. Small village workshops preserve its traditional methods, with artisans shaping and welding copper to create instruments that are as much art as utility.

Raw materials are copper sheets, sometimes mixed with bronze or brass for decorative touches. Tools include hammers, anvils, pliers, welding equipment, kilns, and strings. These tools help shape, trim, and join the instrument’s body, ensuring acoustic precision and structural durability.

Manufacturing Process:

Shaping: Copper sheets are cut, heated, and hammered into conical, curved shapes.

Trimming: Edges are refined with pliers to ensure smooth joins.

Assembly: Two C-shaped sections are temporarily bound with string and prepared for welding.

Welding: Flux paste is applied, and the pieces are joined at high temperatures, forming a seamless, resonant instrument.

Heating and Polishing: The instrument is kiln-fired for strength and then hand-polished to enhance both its tone and aesthetic appeal.
